Most people know that it’s important to set goals. But too often these goals are not met. Here's how to set and accomplish goals using a printable goal planner.

The Importance Of Goal Setting And How It Works

If you are new to goal planning and breaking your goals down into action steps, no worries, I am going to walk you through the entire process to make it simple for you to hit your goals.

Setting goals is important because it gives you a clear and precise direction for what you want to achieve. When you set specific goals you are increasing your chances of success for your desired outcomes.

It's not enough to just say you want to do something. You need a specific goal and then an action plan to make it happen. Otherwise, it feels extremely overwhelming to actually achieve the things you want in life.

Goal Setting Step By Step

I'm sure you've seen a million different blog posts and articles about how to set goals and the step-by-step process so I am going to tailor this specifically to using a goal planner printable.

The process is often overcomplicated but is actually very simple.

Step 1: Start with what you value. What are your top priorities in life? This is where you need to get specific with what YOU value and want to achieve in life. I recommend starting with the Vision Board worksheet and also filling out the Bucket List worksheet inside the planner.

If you are unsure what goals you want this exercise will help you to clearly see what goals you want to set. Below is a more in-depth description of how to use those worksheets in the goal planner.

Step 2: After you have identified the top goals you want to focus on you need to get as specific as you can so that you can break it down into individual steps and tasks to accomplish.

Try to make your goals measurable, relevant and time-bound. You don't want to set a goal like "I want a new job." Get specific with it by describing the type of job and when you want to achieve this goal by. Think about why you want this goal or why is it important to you.

Step 3: Prioritize your goals. Which ones do you want to tackle first? This is where you can use the Yearly Goals worksheet and fill in some of your ideas for each month of the year.

Step 4: Make an action plan. Once you know your most important goals you need to break them down into smaller more manageable steps. This will make a huge difference in making the goals more doable. In the example we just talked about for making a goal to get a new job, you will now want to create individual steps to take to get that new job such as update resume, applying 3x per week, etc.

This is when you can fill out the Monthly Goals worksheet and add in all of your steps and the appropriate information for each goal.

Step 5: Track your progress. Monitor your progress by marking off the tasks that you complete as you work towards your goals. At the end of each month, complete the Monthly Reflections sheet to get a better grasp on what worked and what didn't work. Seeing your progress will help you to continue on the journey of accomplishing your goals.

Although this isn't an actual step in the process it is definitely very important.

CELEBRATE YOURSELF!

As you move closer and closer towards your goals make sure you set aside time to celebrate all your wins.

Using A Printable Goal Planner

Using a printable planner will make your life so much easier. Instead of having to worry about forgetting a step or feeling overwhelmed with all the goals you want to achieve, you can break it down using a printable planner.

Here are some of the amazing benefits of using a printable goal planner:

  1. Using a printable goal planner will help to increase your accountability to actually achieve your goals. Not to mention it can be a very powerful motivator when you write things down on paper and then watch your progress along the way.

  2. Stay organized. Having one central place to keep track of all your life, business, fitness, and other goals will make it more manageable.

  3. When you have a printable planner can help guide you to set specific and measurable goals because you have a structure to not only set the goals but track them as well. This can make it easier to stay focused and motivated as you work towards each individual goal.

  4. Boosts motivation. Seeing your progress and accomplishments laid out on paper can be an excellent motivator to continue working towards all of your goals.

How do you make a goal planner?

Simple. Snag a copy of our Goal Planning printable, download the PDF file, print it out and immediately get started. You can use 8.5 x 11 size paper and even add your goal planner into a 3-ring binder to keep it all together.

What supplies do I need to make a binder for the goal planner printables:

Monthly Goal Calendar

The printable goal planner comes with 12 undated monthly calendars. Each one has a place where you can fill in the bigger goal you are going to focus on for that particular month.

Then, you can break it down into smaller steps using the notes section at the bottom. This will allow you to have monthly plans with individual steps to follow.

Bucket List

This worksheet is here for you to jot down all the items on your bucket list for the current year. It's meant to be kind of like a checklist that you can mark off once you've completed each item.

If you have a lot of ideas on your bucket list for this year, be sure to print out multiple copies so you can get all of your ideas out onto paper.

Yearly Goals

This printable is for you to see the bigger picture for the entire year all in one place. Whether you have personal goals, business goals, career goals, travel goals, weight loss goals, financial goals, or just smaller goals that you want to hit you can write them in for the accompanying month.

This is your year at a glance.

Once you know the bigger goals you want to hit you can then break them down each month so that you can stay focused on each individual goal.

Vision Board

If you are unsure what goals you want to achieve I recommend that you set aside some time to complete the vision board worksheet first.

If you can, give yourself thirty minutes to an hour where you can be free of distractions to visualize all of the goals you want to accomplish. This means, shutting off your phone, going someplace quiet, and just daydreaming.

Write down anything that pops into your head. It's best to get it all out on paper and then you can refine the ideas into specific goals.

There are two different versions of this goal-setting worksheet.

The first option is to envision goals you want to achieve pertaining to different aspects of your life.

  • Relationships

  • Career

  • Health

  • Self-Care

  • Study

  • Finance

  • Home

  • Spiritual

  • Adventure

Instead of just focusing on one aspect of your life you may want to expand and set goals for specific relationships and education in your life. Try to break it down as much as you can because it will make the steps you create for yourself to achieve the goals much easier.

The second option for this worksheet is to do a vision board based on the goals you want to hit each month. This would work really well for business goals you want to hit each month or even savings goals that you want to hit each month.

Monthly Goals

Once you have come up with all the goals you want to hit for the year, you'll need to break them down by month. This helps make the goals feel more doable. Instead of looking at a giant goal, you can view it as smaller steps to hit the bigger goal.

For example, let's say you had a goal to lose 20 lbs by mid-year. When you see that number it almost feels like you'll never be able to do it. But, when you break it down and say you want to lose 5lbs by the end of the month it makes it much more manageable.

The monthly goal worksheet will help you to break down those bigger goals into smaller goals and then individual steps to make progress little by little.

On this worksheet, you can fill in the month and then 3 goals. Each goal then has a place for you to fill out why you want to hit that goal along with 5 steps to break it down even further.

Here's an example:

Goal #1: Add $250 to the savings account

Why: Work towards having $1,000 in an emergency fund to feel more secure with my finances.

Steps: Set up a monthly budget, Review and cancel any unwanted subscriptions and monthly memberships, only get fast food one time per week, etc.

Using this monthly goals worksheet will help you to stay focused and on track throughout the month. Plus, it makes it feel much easier to work towards the bigger goals you have set for yourself.

Monthly Reflection

This should be used at the end of every month as a goal check-up. Set aside some time to reflect back on the month so you can properly plan for the upcoming month.

You will see six questions to help you work through what happened and what you can do to make next month even better.

  • What worked well

  • What didn't work

  • Achievements

  • Memories/Milestones

  • What did I learn this month

  • How can next month be better

Goal Tracker

This is where you can take one of your main goals and break it down into smaller steps. You can also add a deadline and then check off the box once you have achieved the goal.

When you add in the steps to take you are essentially creating your own action plan to follow.
