What is evergreen content?

Evergreen content is content that is timeless or doesn’t go out of date. This means that it is always relevant to your audience regardless of new trends happening in the world.

When it comes to evergreen content there isn’t a set length of time that it will be relevant, so as long as your blog post can be linked to and gain traffic long after you hit publish then it is considered evergreen.

But, it isn’t just about the content that you write, it is the specific topics you choose to write about.

This means you have to take the time to figure out what topics people are searching for and then use that topic to write your blog content.

One major example of an evergreen content topic would be “how to lose weight.” This is something people are constantly searching for online.

Even though the trends around losing weight can change, this is an evergreen content topic that will always be relevant.

Now, your evergreen content for this topic could include your method for losing weight. The content would be specific to YOU and YOUR experiences while the topic is more universal.

But, the thing to keep in mind is that it is evergreen which means it will always be relevant.

Why is evergreen content important?

When you have evergreen content you don’t have to create as much content for your blog because you aren’t writing about trendy topics or things that are happening in the news.

This means you can continue to get blog traffic organically because people will be finding your content in search engines.

For example, I wrote a blog post 7 years ago on my blog, Frugal Fanatic, that still gets traffic today because it is about baby showers.

People are always searching for information on baby showers so I get a lot of organic traffic to those posts. Plus, I took the time to look up some keywords that I knew were being searched for online.

When you write evergreen content you are playing the long game for your blog. It sets the foundation for future traffic and growth.

How to create evergreen content?

Creating evergreen content isn’t hard when you follow the below steps. I am going to walk you through the process of creating evergreen content for your blog.

Step 1 - Find Keywords

The first step is to find keywords in your industry that have a decent monthly search volume. This means people are searching for a specific keyword that is related to your blog in search engines like Google.

Not only can you lookup search volume for keywords that you come up with, but you can also view related terms that you may want to target.

I personally like to use the Google Keyword Planner Tool

All you have to do is go to the link above and then click “Go to Keyword Planner.”

Then, click “Discover new keywords.”

This will take you to a place where you can search for your specific keywords.

In this example, I used the keyword phrase “potty training method” and these are the results that popped up.

You can see that the phrase “3 day potty training method” would be a good one to choose because the average monthly searches are 1k-10k and the competition is low.

As you are scrolling through the ideas, look at their search volumes.

Is there enough search potential? If there isn’t it may mean that people are using a different phrase to search for your topic. In that case, you can view some of their suggested terms and start running searches for those terms.

What I like to do is find a keyword that has a higher search volume but low competition.

You wouldn’t want to choose “best potty training method” because the search volume is low and the competition for that phrase is high so it would be harder to rank for that specific term.

Also, if you want more suggestions you can click on the terms where it says “Broaden Your Search” and add those to your next search. This will help to give you more ideas for evergreen content pieces for your blog.

Step 2 - Write the evergreen content for your blog

Once you have a keyword you want to target in your evergreen content piece it is time to actually write the post. Remember, you want it to be timeless.

You aren’t just writing the content for the sake of writing it.

You want it to not only be valuable to your audience, but you want it to rank high, so you need to focus on:

  • Quality

  • Authority

  • Authenticity

You want your post to be a resource for people who are searching so try to make it definitive and simple enough for beginners to read and comprehend it.

I know it might sound like a lot of work, but once you get into a habit of doing some keyword search BEFORE you write your content and you work on writing evergreen blog posts you will see your traffic increase on your blog.

You would then want to make sure that your posts are optimized to capture your new leads and nurturing them to your products or services.
